Welcome to SELF Principle. A site focused on bringing the latest in evidence-based health, nutrition and wellness research to the public. There are no fad diets here, no rapid secrets to weight loss or longevity. The time-tested approach to a happy, healthy life lies in 4 simple concepts:
- Sleep is medicine: Get enough sleep (around 7-9 hours).
- Exercise is medicine: Move more throughout the day. A simple goal like 10,000 steps a day could be just what you need to feel great.
- Love is medicine: Show gratitude, make time for family and friends, meditate, and pass the gift of kindness to others. At the end of the day “life is 10% of what happens and 90% of how we react to it.”
- Food is medicine: Eat healthy, balanced meals composed of mostly of whole foods, plant-based. You don’t have to starve yourself and you don’t need to follow the latest fad to live a full and rich life. Just look at what the centenarians eat and adopt some of the same lessons for your life. Eat less red and processed meats, refined grains, sugar-sweetened foods, and beverages. Instead, focus on more whole foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, lentils.

Sean Hashmi, M.D., M.S., FASN
Dr. Hashmi is a board-certified Internist, Nephrologist and Obesity Medicine Specialist in Southern California. Dr. Hashmi graduated from the University of California, San Diego Medical School. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at UCLA-Olive View Medical Center followed by a fellowship in Nephrology at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Negean Afifi, D.O.
Director of Wellness
Negean Afifi D.O. is a board certified Emergency Medicine physician in Southern California and a Clinical Instructor for the UCLA School of Medicine. She has a passion for wellness and nutrition, with an emphasis on self-care. Dr. Afifi completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. She is a certified yoga instructor and has had training in Yoga Science at the American Meditation Institute. Dr. Afifi maintains her personal balance by connecting with patients and loved ones, staying active and perpetually seeking the best vegetarian burrito in LA.
